Coldharbour Mill, built between 1797 and 1799 as Fox Brothers’ first spinning mill in the South West, preserves a collection of Victorian spinning frames for the worsted process.
Hattersley looms are still in use to weave knitting yarns, tartan cloth, rugs and stair runners.
Come and discover the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian textile mill! You will see all the stages that a sheep’s fleece goes through to make knitting yarn and how the worsted yarn is used to weave rugs and tartan cloth.
You can adventure in our 12 acre estate which includes 10 acres of wetland, wildlife and Mill pond which is under restoration and see our 18th century water wheel in action – the biggest breast-shot waterwheel still in action in the UK.
The Grist Mill Café Bar sits by the waterside with space for 30 people inside and additional seating outside under the heated umbrella and alongside our beautiful gardens. With a view of the Sensory gardens and water it is the ideal spot to relax with a bite to eat or hot drink.
Serving a selection of locally sourced, cakes, light lunches and snacks, freshly brewed hot drinks we are open to both our Museum visitors and anyone else who wants to come and enjoy the beautiful surrounds.
